The Design Experience Map
A visual representation of my journey through different fields of design, in each project that I have completed during my undergraduate degree (Bachelor in Design).
“In essence, the diagram can be expanded through each project I complete, more fields can be added, and the level of interest will also vary. The Design Experience Map is a tool to express my past experiences, but more so a tool to understand myself as a designer.”
The Design Experience Map is a form of introspection in regards to the projects I completed from 2018-2022. Through setting parameters and developing a system to organize information, it becomes possible to form previously unseen connections. The information is visualized by adressing the negative space, color-coding my personal interests, and drawing the eye to specific areas. It is a diagram to be read from left to right. The lines that grow from the project name, travel through many fields of design that I've been exposed to, sticking around the fields that the project directly relate to. The color of the lines brightens when my interest in a field is greater, and dims when there's less interest.
The usability in these parameters combined allows me to see the fields in which I have less experience, but a greater interest in, serving as a personal guide that suggests what I might dedicate time to in the near future. Likewise, there are fields that I have more experience with, that don't necesarily influence my interest, helping me stay on track when looking for jobs that may offer new learning opportunities. The journey of the lines end at a number, representing how I've subjectively listed the projects in how strongly they are oriented towards problem solving, where it becomes evident for example, that the projects in which I work with other people, tend to be more so than when I am working alone.
